Reasons Behind Low Total Number of EPL Goals
The number of goals scored so far in the 2021/22 Premier League season has been historically poor, with many strikers failing to net goals like they used to.
In the last three seasons, the Golden Boot was awarded to attackers who had managed to score over 22 goals — and Harry Kane won the 2020/21 campaign award with 23 goals.
As it stands, Liverpool strikers (Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota) are occupying the top three spots and none of the other EPL forwards have scored more than 10 times.
If players continue at this rate of 2.77 goals per game, then no non-Liverpool player will hit above 15 goals by the end of the season.
EPL giants such as Chelsea and Manchester United have spent big on securing elite strikers – and are yet to produce results.
At Chelsea, Romelu Lukaku has found it difficult to adjust to Thomas Tuchel’s system while Cristiano Ronaldo is struggling to keep up with the Premier League’s high-intensity gameplay.
